Bringing Up the Rear Part V: I Love it When a Plan Comes Together

9 Apr

As you can tell from my last entry, the latest round of mods to my Z have been nothing short of ‘interesting’. Basically, it’s kicked our collective asses, and it’s taken alot of blood, sweat, tears, money and patience to have it all come together. But we rounded an important corner, and I think I can officially say that for the time being “I’m done!” (well, sorta).

A couple weeks ago, I took the 8 hour drive up to Buffalo to have Mike from Innovative Tuning finalize the Haltech tune. The car decently enough on the way up, no issues. The ride back was even better, firstly because I found a different way to go, saving me about an hour, and secondly because it was nice to be back in a car that was properly tuned.

Last weekend we decided it was time to tackle the 4.3 final drive install. I’ve written alot about this custom setup in previous entries. It’s been sitting here for probably 6 or 7 months now, just waiting. Of course, this seemingly simple swap was not without it’s drama. First, we had a helluva time getting 1 of the exhaust bolts out. After that was solved, the exhaust came down and we found something that we at the shop call “no bueno”. My midpipe was cracked almost all the way around, right where the resonator meets the piping section. In addition it was developing a second crack at the resonator itself. It had noticeable scrape marks on the underside from numerous incidents. Since the car is so low, stuff like this is inevitable. The exhaust has been in the car for probably 5 years now, so it wouldn’t be the end of the world. Except…it’s titanium. As some may know, welding titanium isn’t exactly like welding anything else. Takes some pretty specialized stuff, that we certainly don’t have here. A few phone calls later and I was hooked up with Joe from Accurate Welding. I immediately ran down there, midpipe in hand, and in no time, I was back on my way!

This is one of the great things about being in NY, and I’m sure other areas of the country too. Everything you can think of is literally a stones throw away. Today we had some spare time so we finished up the install. Unfortunately it’s been raining most of the day, so I haven’t actually had a chance to drive the car yet. Kwame did though, and his words went something like “HOLY SHIT THAT THING IS QUICK!” He was all smiles – I hope I am too!

More New Toys Coming (Tomei + 350Z= :) )

24 Jan

Tomei recently announced plans for a new line of Titanium Exhaust systems for several popular cars. The first one coming is the Evo X, which we announced here on the blog last month. I just wanted to share a few pics of the forthcoming system for the 350Z.

The Expreme Titanium exhaust will be out in 2010, and is a single, lightweight exhaust system for the 2003-2008 350Z (including NISMO)
Pics courtest of Dino @ Speedhunters. I’ll have new pics to share soon along with full specs

Tomei also has their new metal Super Catalyzer now for the 350Z as as well. They include integrated bungs for wideband 02 sensors, full stainless construction and are 150 cell, so they will flow amazingly well.

Tomei Titanium Catback + Test Pipe Evo X!!

2 Dec

Brand new from Tomei Japan comes their titanium competition exhaust for the Evo X. The main priorities were for overall engine performance gains as opposed to just maximum peak power. The tubes size and length was carefully selected to suit each engine characteristics and to suit the cars chassis as well for maximum torque, response, and exhaust flow efficiency through the layout. It is difficult to increase the power on the EVO X with the muffler alone but this design has optimized in all ar as. The use of Titanium material with the single piping layout also helped reduced the overall weight of 15.65kg! This amazing weight reduction helps with the cars performance and handling whilst maintaining strength that Titanium.

Features:

1. Muffler Section – φ115 t=1mm design with straight cut finish racing for a fantastic look. Laser etched logo and beautiful heat gradation gives the EXPREME Ti a good visual appeal.

2. Muffler Mounting Band – Made from stainless steel the band this band is designed as a support band instead of having is welded to the actual muffler. This keeps both separated and greatly reduces stress from vibration that would usually be present if the support was welded directly to the muffler. The band is also fitted with a special high heatproof spacer rubber for increased stress reduction from vibrations.

3. Mounting Clamps – Rather than the conventional worm type clamps, Tomei uses T bolt clamps as it provides double the clamping force even under harsh conditions. This band is best suited for extreme conditions from high heat stress and vibrations this will firmly keep the pipes air tightly sealed together.

4. Resonator Casing – All of the Φ152 t = 1mm Titanium design achieves the optimum exhaust efficiency and straight design, finished off with a mirror finish plate with the embossed logo and heat gradation color for that lasting impression.

5. Resonator Internals – The all Titanium made inner mesh tube is t=1mm φ3 P=5mm with an open slot ratio of 32.6%. With maximum weight reduction and exhaust flow being the key points you can expect the best flow rate with an addictive racing sound from this exhaust without any compromise. Unlike the usual conventional short fiberglass threads, the use of the long fiberglass thread wool was chosen for its excellent sound absorbing and excellent durability to cope with high pressure and high temperatures.

6. Spring Mounted Joints – The hook anchor points allows the springs to firmly hold the pipes together which is sufficient as it is alone but the use of the clamp bands adds that extra guarantee for a secure fitment for a reliable joint. Just like you find on very high end racing headers

7. Mid Pipe – The main purpose for this product is for pure competition performance exhaust efficiency so the racing layout design was made with bare minimum bends as possible over the entire Φ80mm t=1mm Titanium piping and the 3 piece for ease of installation and weight reduction.

8. Mid Pipe Flange – The flange was made from a 6.0mm plate for strength design purposes to minimize distortions and cracks from aging to guarantee strength. This keeps the light weight design yet maintains strength equal to the factory stock design and guarantees the sealing characteristics that is required.

Optional Titanium test pipe sold separately!

My Holy Grail…

19 Aug

New blog, first post. It’s late, I’m having a mental block and I couldn’t figure out what to post. So I said to myself what is the coolest and/or rarest piece for your 350z/Z33 build that you have pictures of??

I think this takes the cake, ARC Z33 Super Titan Silencer Y-Pipe Back Exhaust. Some of you might have seen me post pictures before on my350z, but I took the pictures down. In any case here it is again, “an oldie but a goodie”. This bad boy set me back a lot of ducketts for sure.

Oh and if you want one for your ride you know who to hit up 😉
